What is a chocolate Maine Coon?

A chocolate Maine Coon has a rich, warm brown coat caused by a recessive dilution of the black-based color gene (the “b” allele at the B/b/bl locus). Because the gene is recessive, both parents must silently carry it for a kitten to be born chocolate — which is why chocolate Maine Coons are considered one of the rarest naturally occurring colors in the breed.

Are chocolate Maine Coons rare?

Yes, genuinely rare. Chocolate requires two carrier parents that don’t visibly show the color themselves, so it can go undetected for generations before appearing. Are chocolate Maine Coons recognized by TICA or CFA for showing?

Chocolate and lilac are not currently included among the traditional show-recognized Maine Coon colors under major breed standards such as TICA and CFA.

Bellatrix is transparent about our rare-color program. Our chocolate Maine Coons are part of a carefully documented, long-term color development program rather than being represented as traditional show-standard colors. We believe families considering a rare-color Maine Coon should always ask breeders for information about the genetics and lineage behind their color claims.

Does Bellatrix genetically test for chocolate coloring?

What does polydactyl mean in Maine Coons?

Polydactyl means that a cat is born with extra toes. This naturally occurring genetic trait has a long historical association with Maine Coons and is especially well known in cats originating from coastal areas of New England.

Polydactyl Maine Coons often have beautifully large, wide paws that enhance the already impressive appearance of the breed.

Does Bellatrix breed polydactyl Maine Coons only for appearance?

No. Our breeding program looks beyond the number of toes. Bellatrix evaluates polydactyl kittens for paw structure, symmetry, placement, overall conformation, and long-term soundness.

Our goal is to preserve the historic polydactyl trait while maintaining the health, structure, temperament, and exceptional qualities expected from a well-bred Maine Coon.

Is polydactylism healthy for a cat?

Polydactyly is generally considered a benign anatomical variation. Polydactyl cats typically live the same active, healthy lives as standard-paw cats.

The primary additional care consideration is nail maintenance. Because polydactyl Maine Coons have extra toes and claws, owners should regularly inspect and trim every nail to prevent overgrowth.

Health, Genetics & Registration

Are Bellatrix breeding cats health and genetically tested?

Yes. Health and genetics are extremely important to our breeding program. Our parent cats undergo extensive genetic screening for more than 120 known feline genetic conditions.

Our kittens also receive age-appropriate veterinary care before leaving Bellatrix, including vaccinations, deworming, microchipping, veterinary examinations, and rabies vaccination when age appropriate.

Do Bellatrix kittens come with pet insurance?

Yes. Every Bellatrix kitten goes home with 30 days of Trupanion pet insurance included. We strongly encourage families to consider continuing pet insurance coverage after the complimentary period to help provide long-term protection against unexpected veterinary expenses.

Are Bellatrix kittens TICA registered?

Yes. Bellatrix kittens are TICA registered. Registration paperwork is provided in accordance with the terms of the adoption agreement and Bellatrix Code of Ethics.

For kittens placed as pets, applicable registration documentation is provided after Bellatrix receives proof of spay or neuter from a licensed veterinarian, as outlined in the adoption agreement.

Does Bellatrix require kittens to be spayed or neutered?

Yes, unless breeding rights have been specifically approved and arranged in advance. Kittens placed as pets are required to be spayed or neutered according to the terms and timeline outlined in the Bellatrix adoption contract and Code of Ethics.

Can I purchase breeding rights for a Bellatrix kitten?

Breeding rights are offered selectively and are not automatically available with every kitten. Bellatrix carefully reviews breeding-rights inquiries to help protect our bloodlines, our cats, and the future of the breed.

Maine Coon Grooming & Care

How often should I brush my Maine Coon?

Most Maine Coons benefit from brushing approximately two to three times per week. During heavier seasonal shedding periods, particularly in the spring and fall, more frequent or even daily brushing may be helpful.

Short grooming sessions of approximately five to ten minutes can help prevent tangles and matting. A wide-tooth comb followed by an appropriate grooming or slicker brush can work well for maintaining the Maine Coon’s beautiful coat.

Do Maine Coons need regular baths?

Maine Coons generally do not require frequent bathing. Depending on the individual cat, coat type, and lifestyle, an occasional bath every several weeks or as needed may be appropriate.

Always remove tangles and mats before bathing, as water can cause existing tangles to tighten and become more difficult to remove.

How do I trim a Maine Coon’s claws, especially a polydactyl Maine Coon?

Most Maine Coons benefit from having their nails checked and trimmed approximately every two to four weeks.

For polydactyl Maine Coons, it is especially important to carefully inspect every toe. Extra claws can sometimes be overlooked during routine grooming and may become overgrown if they are not regularly trimmed.

What should I feed a Maine Coon?

Maine Coons benefit from a nutritionally complete, high-quality diet that supports their large frame, muscular development, coat, and overall health. Quality animal-based protein should be an important component of their diet, and many families choose to incorporate moisture-rich wet food into their feeding routine.

Kittens typically require more frequent meals while growing, while adult feeding schedules should be adjusted according to the cat’s age, activity level, body condition, and veterinary recommendations.

Do Maine Coons have special health monitoring needs as they grow?

How do I schedule a video meet-and-greet?

Is a video meet-and-greet required before adopting?

Yes. The video meet-and-greet is an important part of our adoption process. It gives both your family and Bellatrix an opportunity to discuss expectations, answer questions, and determine whether a kitten is the right match for your home.

We do not require a reservation deposit before the appropriate steps in our adoption process have been completed.

Does the video meet-and-greet cost anything?

No. Our video meet-and-greet is complimentary and provides an opportunity to learn more about our kittens and our program before deciding whether you would like to move forward.

What can I expect during the video meet-and-greet?

During your call, you may see the kitten or kittens you are interested in playing and interacting within their home environment. Depending on availability, you may also see their King and Queen parents.

Is a deposit required to reserve a kitten?

Yes. A $500 non-refundable reservation deposit is required to officially reserve a kitten. The deposit is collected only at the appropriate stage of the adoption process after the video meet-and-greet and completion of the required adoption documentation.

Can I pick up my kitten in person?

Yes. Approved families are welcome to arrange an in-person pickup in Blanchard, Oklahoma. Kittens typically leave for their new homes according to the timeline established by Bellatrix based on age, development, and veterinary care.

The individual who signs the adoption agreement must participate in the required transfer arrangements as outlined in the adoption process.

How are kittens delivered to families outside Oklahoma?

Bellatrix works with families throughout the United States and offers several transportation options depending on location and availability.

We can coordinate with a professional USDA-certified pet transport nanny for safe, personalized delivery. Arrangements may also be available to meet families at the Oklahoma City airport.

Transportation arrangements and associated costs are determined individually based on destination, scheduling, and the delivery method selected.

What age do Bellatrix kittens go to their new homes?

Bellatrix kittens generally transition to their new families at approximately 15–16 weeks of age, after completing the appropriate developmental milestones and veterinary care required before placement.
